Summer Camp for Low Income Families

Note: Our next summer camp session, the Yes I Can! Triathlon Camp is June 26 – August 27, 2017.

If you are like most Americans, the phrase “Summer Camp” conjures some fun memories. Camp is a time when kids get to play, learn, and explore. It’s also fresh air and exercise, wrapped in a layer of fun. But for too many families in the U.S., summer camp is not a possibility. Between the cost of camp and the need for consistent child care over the summer, families have to make the hard decision not to send their children to camp.

We can do better. Not only should low-income families have access to camp, but they should have their kids coming out of camp healthier, happier, and more confident. This is the driving idea behind the Summer Triathlon Camp, designed and funded by The Happy Tooth Foundation.

Summer Triathlon Camp for Low-Income Families

Our Summer Triathlon Camp for low-income families focuses on fun and is designed to promote a sense of accomplishment in our campers. Not only do our kids get to experience a healthy camp experience with plenty of exercise and balanced and nutritious meals, they get to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a kids triathlon at the end of the camp session.

What You Can Expect

We work hard to give underprivileged children the kind of summer camp experience that all other children get to have. For example, our camp offers:

  • Swim lessons by certified swimming instructors
  • Arts and crafts
  • Music classes
  • Breakfast and lunch, catered by local chefs

We also understand that underprivileged kids and their families face additional challenges. For that reason, we include a number of other benefits to make camp appealing to these families:

  • Reading and math refreshers, in accordance with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System
  • Mentorships with local community business leaders, eager to share their knowledge and life experiences
  • Free athletic gear for biking, running, swimming, etc.
  • Free weekend groceries for the whole family

Our camp is lead by a member of the UNC Triathlon Team who is also a USA Triathlon Certified Youth Coach, and who has served as a camp counselor in summers past.

Is Our Camp Right for Your Kids?

If you live in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area (or even slightly beyond), you may be interested in our camp. Though many of our campers come from families that are already being helped by The Happy Tooth Foundation, there is no reason why Summer Camp cannot be your first Happy Tooth experience!

We ask that all interested families contact us!

Looking to Donate or Sponsor a Child?

Though we offer our camp to families for free, the actual cost of camp is quite high. The expense of running our camp is paid by donors and sponsors who share our mission and vision.

Indeed, many of our donors and volunteers come from underserved families and communities. They are looking to give back so that other kids, like themselves, can have the chance to succeed.

If this sounds like something you, too, want to be involved with, we ask that you start by making a small donation or sponsoring a child so that he or she may attend our summer camp.
